چکیده
Cardiac Disorders Predisposing to Embolic Stroke • Data from 4,558 consecutive complete necropsies in patients 16 years of age or older were analyzed to ascertain the influence of certain variables upon the frequency of embolic encephalomalacia. Embolic lesions of the central nervous system occurred more commonly in the female, regardless of age, race, diabetic status, nutritional status or heart size, partly because the cardiovascular lesions responsible for embolic dissemination were more common in women. While affecting only a small percentage of patients at any age, cerebral embolism assumes more importance in strokes of young adulthood. Embolic infarcts demonstrate a predilection for cerebral and cerebellar cortical locations via the long circumferential arterial branches and tend to spare the parasagittal perforating branches supplying the brain stem and diencephalic nuclei. Certain cardiac states predispose to cerebral embolism. Patients with endocarditis show the greatest risk of embolic lesions, although patients with rheumatic valvular disease of the left heart and mural thrombi of the left ventricle produce numerically more cases of embolic encephalomalacia because these conditions occur far more often than the endocardidites. Predisposing factors in cardiogenic cerebral embolism.
Predisposing Factors in Cardiogenic Cerebral Embolism To the Editor: I read with interest the article by Yasaka and associates' on the pathophysiology of intracardiac thrombus formation in patients with recurrent cerebral embolism. However, I was surprised that there were no cases found or mention made of either paradoxical embolism or atrial septal aneurysm as predisposing factors of recurrent...
متن کاملProtective Effect of Delayed Ischemic Postconditioning on Embolic Stroke Complications in Female Rat
Background & Aims: Ischemic postconditioning, conducted by a series of brief occlusion and release of the bilateral common carotid arteries, has neuroprotective properties in permanent or transient models of middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusion but its delayed neuroprotective effects in the embolic model of stroke, especially in female rat, have not yet been reported and were investigated ...
متن کاملCerebral hemorrhagic infarction at autopsy: cardiac embolic cause and the relationship to the cause of death.
In 48 patients dying within 15 days following a supra-tentorial cerebral infarct, the presence of hemorrhagic infarction at autopsy was related to a cardiac embolic cause of the infarct, and to the cause of death. Hemorrhagic infarcts were more common among patients dying from brain herniation than among those dying from a non-cerebral cause. Cardiac embolic strokes were more often hemorrhagic ...
متن کاملVitamin E Derivative Alpha-Tocotrienol Failed to Show Neuroprotective Effects after Embolic Stroke in Rats
Objective(s) Previous studies have demonstrated that pretreatment with alpha-tocotrienol (a-TCT) can reduce ischemic damage in mice following middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusion. It is also reported to decrease stroke- dependent brain tissue damage in 12-Lox-deficient mice and spontaneously hypertensive rats. In the present study, the neuroprotective effects of a-TCT and rosiglitazone (RGZ)...
متن کاملEvaluation of the risk of immediate anticoagulant treatment in patients with embolic stroke of cardiac origin.
We evaluated immediate anticoagulation of embolic stroke. Of 39 patients suffering a focal cerebral ischemia caused by a cardiac embolus, 38 were submitted to CT within 24 hours after onset. Twenty-one patients received direct full anticoagulation and, in 10 patients, treatment was delayed because of hemorrhagic infarction on initial CT (3 cases), cardiac cause 24 hours or more after stroke ons...
